What is Public Health Insurance?

Public health insurance in Slovakia is mandatory for every resident of the country. There are two private providers, DôveraUnion, and one state-controlled VšZP. It covers practicians, specialists, hospitals, labs, surgery, and rehabs. 

Insurance covers the majority of the treatment. Some treatments or above-standard exams may require additional payment to a hospital or doctor. The goal of mandatory Insurance is to provide an affordable standard for everyone.

As an employee, you do not need to worry. Your employer will register and pay a fraction of your salary on your behalf. As an independent freelancer or small entrepreneur, you are responsible for registering and paying on your own. As voluntarily unemployed, you must register and pay a minimum fee. 

Register your children and minors too. You do not pay for them – the state does.

Please note only Dôvera, Union, and VšZP are licensed for Public Health Insurance. Distinguish the difference between Commercial Health Insurance. There are no dealers or agents for Public Health Insurance.

Fees

Public Health Insurance in Slovakia follows the law, and there is no competition in the amount you pay. The only legal competition is in the quality of the service and benefits provided.

The amount you submit is related to your income and is the same with every provider. There is a minimum and maximum gap. Once per year, you will receive an Annual Account, and you will get your balance sheet.

If you fail to pay or owe money to your Public Health Insurance provider, your coverage will only be limited to emergency treatment. The employee is protected and covered without interruption if the employer fails to pay.

Choosing Public Health Insurance Provider in Slovakia

You can switch between Insurance providers once per year. The deadline for change application is by the end of September and is effective from January. 

Initially, you must choose one of three available Public Health Insurance providers.

Conclusion

Although Dôvera is part of the financial group involved in modern clinics and hospitals in the country that stands behind the newest Hospital Bory and Svet Zdravia network, their lack of an English app and website plays a role for most expats. By 1.1.2024 their gain is 40876 clients.

Union is a minor player, but they are trendy among foreigners due to their English availability and competitive conditions similar to Dôvera. By 1.1.2024 their gain is 7873 clients.

Všeobecná zdravotná poisťovňa (VšZP) is a state-controlled institution known for the latest hassle to sign a contract with the newest hospital Bory. The inherited elderly population causes their significant market share. There is nothing wrong with registering with them, but there may be more frustration than with the other two. By 1.1.2024 number of 48749 clients left the insurance company.
